The Process to Treat Underarms Sweating
This is what is occurring under your skin

How It Works
miraDry treatment is a simple, non-invasive and follows a quick 3 Step Procedure.

The Science of miraDry
MiraDry essentially uses a precise amount of thermal energy (electromagnetic) to target odour and sweat glands in the underarm area, permanently eliminating them. This occurs via a process called thermolysis (a heating process), which directs the energy below the skin to the location of the glands. This means that the surface of the skin actually remains cool. It is a fast, non-invasive treatment delivering lasting results for excessive underarm sweating, because the sweat and odour glands do not regenerate post treatment.
Most patients will experience a reduction of up to 82% in underarm sweating after only a single treatment.
After the miraDry treatment, patients can resume their regular activities. In some cases, strenuous exercise may need to be restricted for a few days. Taking over the counter pain medication and/or using ice packs on the treatment area can provide comfort during the recovery process. While complications from the miraDry treatment are rare, some patients report swelling, discomfort, and numbness of the underarm area or down the arm, which usually abates over a short period of time. It is important to note that miraDry is only used to treat excessive sweating in the underarm area – it cannot be used to treat primary hyperhidrosis in any other body areas.
Benefits of MiraDry For Excessive Underarms Sweating
Most patients will experience immediate and dramatic sweat reduction after the first treatment. Unlike what is typically seen in all other treatments, miraDry does not cause compensatory sweating. The fact that only 2%of the body’s sweat glands are located in the underarm area, also means that miraDry does not stop or prevent the body from cooling itself.

Compare miraDry to Other Treatments
MiraDry is the most affordable treatment available, as most patients only require one treatment. Unlike other treatments, miraDry provides a permanent sweat and odour reduction that is non-invasive and non-surgical.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! A reduction of up to 70% can be expected. miraDry is the first device to receive FDA clearance for both underarm hair removal of all colours, and underarm sweat removal. Although the primary targets are sweat and odour glands, hair follicles reside in the same plane as these glands.
Dr Dahal will first numb your underarms with local anaesthetic, therefore you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure. At times you may experience a slight warmth and “suction” sensation on the skin.
Only 2% of your body’s total sweat glands are located in the underarms. Removing these sweat glands does not stop the body from effectively cooling itself, and does not create compensatory sweat (sweating excessively from other parts of the body) as seen in other procedures such as surgery.
Injections work by blocking the chemical signals from the nerves responsible for producing sweat. On average, results only last between 3-6 months, meaning that you must return for more injections to reduce sweating – an expensive exercise.
You need to be over 18 years of age. The treatment is not recommended for individuals who have an intolerance to local anaesthesia, require supplemental oxygen, or who have a pacemaker.
Initially, you will experience some mild swelling and bruising of the underarms that fully clears within the following weeks. Short term altered sensation may be experienced in the underarms, which also subsides gradually. Importantly, the procedure does not create rebound/compensatory sweating as seen in other sweat removal treatments.
There is essentially no down-time for this treatment. You will be able to return home the same day, and most people resume their regular schedule in full within 72 hours of treatment (Exercise is not recommended for the first 3 days).
If you are tired of sweating from your underarms, you are likely to be a candidate for the miraDry procedure. A common misconception is that you must be diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis to be eligible for the treatment. Although those suffering with the medical condition are likely to experience life changing results, any person suffering from the following should consider miraDry as a solution:
- You don’t wear certain colours or materials, and/or notice sweat stains on clothing
- You keep jackets and jumpers on to avoid visible sweat stains
- You worry about sweating in advance of situations e.g. business meetings, dates
- You overuse anti-perspirants and/or deodorants
- You are embarrassed that someone might see you sweating
- You sweat even in colder conditions
Yes! In a large, sham-control, peer-reviewed, multi-site clinical study, the long-term results and efficacy of miraDry have been proven. A detailed look at the results of these findings can be found at the International Hyperhidrosis Society website: https://www.sweathelp.org/treatments-hcp/miradry.html
Generally, treatment takes 1 – 1.5 hours. This, on average, reduces underarm sweating by 82% and costs $2,500.
After your treatment, you will be able to return home the same day, and it is recommended to use icepacks on the underarms for the following few days. You may also be prescribed a mild over-the-counter pain medication. It is also recommended to avoid exercising for 3 days.
miraDry is not currently covered by either Medicare or private health insurance.
No. Currently miraDry is only indicated for underarm sweat.
