What is bruxism?
Bruxism is involuntary excessive grinding or teeth clenching. This usually happens during sleep. This can lead to jaw pain and headaches. You may even wear off your dental enamel and need to see a dentist for further review.
How to treat?
Treatment involves injecting muscle relaxants into the master muscle that is located on the sides of the face. This reduces muscle size, improves symptoms and also gives an overall slimmer oval V shaped face. This treatment is most popular for its facial shape changing results in some women in Asian countries.
What are the side effects?
This is a low risk treatment. There may be minimal discomfort experienced with injections and mild bruising. There will be reduction in your chewing power, which is well tolerated by most people. Rare side effects include asymmetry, loss of extreme smile and paradox bulging of the muscle (this can be corrected). These are self limiting and can wear off with time, and can subsequently be avoided for future treatments.
How often do I need the treatment?
Initially treatment should be repeated every eight weeks until the desired results are achieved. For maintenance you may require treatment every 3-4 months. After maintenance, you may only require treatment every 9-12 months.
