Guide to lip dermal fillers: What to expect

Lip dermal fillers are commonly requested from many of our patients.

Lip fillers can improve volume, shape, asymmetry, border, projection, cupid’s bow and skin quality of the lips. Lip fillers are also used to improve philtrum and cutaneous lip area as well.

How much lip filler will I need?

Starting with 1ml is generally a good idea and enough for most patients. More can be added as needed. The dermal filler is charged per ml.

Pain relief

Usually topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) is all that is required. Nerve blocks can also be performed.

Lip filler treatment

Topical anaesthetic is first removed and the lips are cleaned with alcohol. We usually use a fine gauge needle to inject lips, however cannulas are sometimes used.

What should I expect after lip filler treatment?

Lips are usually a little swollen and red.

Are there any side effects/risks of getting lip fillers?

Generally, this is a very low risk procedure. The side effects may include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Asymmetry (asymmetry may be present before the procedure)
  • Infection (not common)
  • Hypersensitivity, allergic response, anaphylactic (rare)
  • Formation of nodules (lumps) around treated area
  • Vascular compromise (necrosis) (not common)
  • Blindness (rare)

Aftercare after getting lip fillers

  • Avoid overheating (no exercise on the day, no sauna for a week)
  • Avoid makeup for 4 hours

What should I expect after getting lip fillers?

The majority of the swelling will subside after 2-3 days. However, it may take another 2-4 weeks for the swelling to completely resolve. You may also notice asymmetry, this may be due to the swelling post treatment. This is best reviewed at 4 weeks post treatment.

Do I need a follow up appointment?

We recommend a follow up appointment 4 weeks post treatment.

How long do lip fillers last?

Factors affecting the lifespan of fillers include; the type of product used, your metabolism, anatomy and dosage. Lip fillers can last up to 6 to 9 months.

When will my lip fillers need to be topped up?

Typically, during the review appointment (4 weeks post treatment), we discuss with the patient if a top-up is required, based on the aesthetic outcome of the initial treatment. If the desired result is achieved initially, then 6 monthly treatments are ideal for the first 12 months. After this treatments may only be required annually.

Depending on your aesthetic desires, treatment plans can also be made more frequently (once a month/or 4 monthly).
