Micro needling is a popular treatment in the aesthetic world. Many people are familiar with the image posted by Kim Kardashian West a few years ago. This no doubt increased the use of skin needling, however I believe that it also inaccurately misrepresented micro needling and created hesitancy regarding its use. The term “Vampire Facial” is also commonly used, invoking fear and horror in many patients and casting a shadow of doubt over the treatment.
I would like to address some common patient questions and provide accurate information to pull apart some of the myths surrounding skin microneedling.
What is skin micro needling and are all treatments the same?
We use Dermapen 4TM in the clinic which is an Australian made device. It is designed to glide (not scrape) over the skin creating millions of fine fractional channels up to 104% faster than other micro needling devices. This is important in order to produce controlled trauma, stimulating the growth factors required for the desired outcome and to allow appropriate healing. The device can be used anywhere on the body including hard to reach areas such as eyelids, around the eyes, earlobes, neck, lips, nose or larger areas of neck and décolleté, stomach and legs.
Dermapen 4TM treatments are faster, safer, and produce optimal results for all skin types/colour, when compared with other device alternatives.
Is skin micro needling painful?
Dermapen 4TM provides comfortable, virtually pain-free microneedling treatments, when compared to other devices on the market. The device also produces vibration, which helps to minimise discomfort, meaning there is no requirement for local anaesthetic.
Is there any downtime after treatments?
Generally no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours post treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after.
How many treatments are recommended for rejuvenation, acne scarring and stretch marks?
As a general guide:
| Treatment | Recommended number of treatments | Recovery time between sessions |
| Rejuvenation* | 3-6 treatments | 6-8 weeks apart |
| Acne scarring | 4-6 treatments | 6-8 weeks apart |
| Stretch marks | 4-8 treatments | 6-8 weeks |
| Pigmentation | 4-6 treatments | 2-4 weeks apart |
*Superficial treatments maybe recommended at 4 weekly intervals
How should I prepare my skin for a Skin Micro Needling treatment?
For optimal results, an appropriate home care regime should be determined by your clinician 2-3 weeks prior to allow the skin time to prepare, strengthen and fortify (especially for thin or delicate skin areas). You should also continue to use recommended cosmeceuticals for a period of 2-3 weeks post treatment.
How long should it take before I see results?
Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will become visible after 3 to 6 treatments (spaced 2-8 weeks apart). The condition of your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments.
